Gail Davenport to Serve as Delegate to the Democratic National Convention

Jonesboro, GA - Gail Davenport was
elected Delegate to the 2004 Democratic National Convention from Georgia’s 13th
Congressional District. The Convention will take place July 26-29, 2004 in
Boston. MA. Gail will join with 4,353 delegates from every state and territory
to nominate the next President of the United States.
“Americans realize that President Bush has led this country down the wrong path
and are ready for change,” said Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry
McAuliffe. “In Senator Kerry we have a candidate with a clear plan to secure
our homeland with the help of our allies around the world, make health care and
education affordable for American families, and return our nation to the
economic prosperity Bush squandered these past four years.
”Gail Davenport lives in Jonesboro where she is very active in her community.
She is president of the Concerned Black Citizens Coalition of Clayton County;
president of the RainbowPUSH Coalition Clayton-Henry-Fayette-Spalding Chapter;
chairperson of the United Negro College Fund, Clayton County Campaign; Director
of Metro South Youth Association; Coordinator of COLLEGE BOUND; member
of the President’s Advisory Council of the American Business Women’s
Association, Greenbriar Chapter; and a member of the National Alumnae
Association of Spelman College. Gail has coordinated many
Get-out-the-Vote efforts in her community, especially since serving as a
Delegate to the 1988 Democratic National Convention. She is looking forward to
serving as a delegate this year and representing her community along with the
rest of the Georgia delegation, which includes such prominent Democrats as Mayor
Shirley Franklin, Congressman David Scott, Congressman John Lewis, Congressman
Sanford Bishop, Former Governor Roy Barnes, Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond
and Former Atlanta Police Chief Eldrin Bell.
In addition to nominating the President and Vice President, Ms Davenport and the
other delegates will vote on the Democratic Party’s National Platform, a
statement of the party’s priorities and principles for the years to come.
Democratic National Committee Secretary Alice Travis Germond said, “This is the
most unified the Democratic Party has ever been, and I know each and every one
of our delegates will work tirelessly to win back the White House this
November.”
