Chandra Harris/ 770.210.5073 GAIL DAVENPORT WITH UNSUNG HERO AWARD JONESBORO, GA—Today Congressman David Scott (D-GA) announced his selection of Gail Davenport to receive the distinguished Unsung Hero Award from the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Spouses Program. “I am proud to celebrate the praiseworthy accomplishments that Gail Davenport has achieved through her continued and far-reaching community service,” said Congressman Scott. “A committed and well-accomplished leader, Gail Davenport has demonstrated special efforts to improve the quality of education, housing, and healthcare for her fellow citizens and has established herself as a concerned and active citizen of constant service to her community.” A resident of Clayton County, Gail Davenport is a Civil Rights activist and humanitarian. She currently serves as the President of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, Clayton-Henry-Fayette-Spalding Chapter, and Chairperson of the United Negro College Fund, Clayton County Campaign. Gail’s work in Clayton County has included conducting workshops on home ownership, spearheading the county’s annual ecumenical observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, and founding COLLEGE BOUND to encourage area students to attend college. Gail is a member of Andrews Chapel United Methodist Church, a 1970 graduate of Spelman College, and the recipient of commendations by numerous professional and civic organizations. “Without reservation I salute Gail Davenport for her unyielding and effective service to others,” continued Scott. “Gail Davenport has shown great passion and dedication to her noble cause.” The CBC Spouses Unsung Heroes Awards Program recognizes those individuals who have made a noteworthy impact in their community. These heroes are committed to improving the quality of life for people in our society through achievements in the fields of health, technology, science, business, community service, education, entertainment, and sports. Each Member of the Congressional Black Caucus is invited by the CBC Spouses to choose an Unsung Hero from his or her Congressional District. Gail Davenport will be saluted at the Unsung Heroes Award Gala during the CBC Spouses’ 12th Annual Education Scholarship Fund Golf & Tennis Tournament on June 26-28, 2004 in Washington, D.C.
